The Commercial Motorcycle and Tricycle Operators Association (COMTOA) has issued a firm and expanded warning over the growing harassment of Keke and Okada operators in Delta State, accusing disgruntled former members and other unauthorized individuals of attempting to forcefully collect illegal check-off dues under fake union names.
Speaking during a detailed press conference on Friday in Effurun, COMTOA State Treasurer, Mr. Miller OkeOghene, flanked by other top executives of the association, condemned the actions of groups who he said have no recognition from the Delta State Government.
According to Mr. OkeOghene, the recent wave of intimidation is being spearheaded by individuals who were previously members of COMTOA but were expelled for serious misconduct.
“Those attempting to float new unions are disgruntled and greedy former members who were caught short-changing COMTOA through fraudulent activities. These are people driven by personal gain, not the welfare of operators,” he stated.
He emphasized that COMTOA remains the only government-recognized body responsible for administering and coordinating the affairs of motorcycle and tricycle operators in the state.
“Any other association collecting monies from operators is acting illegally, and we will not tolerate it,” he warned.
Mr. OkeOghene urged all operators to resist harassment, refuse illegal payments, and immediately report any individual or group demanding unauthorized dues. He revealed that the association is set to inaugurate a special task force that will work with security agencies to arrest impostors and protect riders across the state.
“We are putting structures in place to ensure that anyone who harasses operators or defies the authority of COMTOA will face the full weight of the law,” he said.
COMTOA: A Union for All Nigerians
Addressing concerns about tribal politics often used by impostor groups, Mr. OkeOghene stressed that COMTOA is an inclusive organization that accommodates every Nigerian.
“COMTOA is open to all, regardless of tribe or background. Our branches and units are led by Igbo, Hausa, Edo, Yoruba, Urhobo, and others. We don’t segregate. We unite,” he emphasized.
Welfare of Members Remains Top Priority
The treasurer reaffirmed COMTOA’s commitment to the welfare of its members, noting that each unit is empowered with funds to manage welfare-related matters independently.
“We take welfare seriously. Every unit has the authority and resources to legislate on welfare issues affecting their members. No one is left behind,” he added.
Transparent Relationship With Government
Mr. OkeOghene also highlighted COMTOA’s longstanding cordial relationship with the Delta State Government, describing it as one built on transparency and accountability.
“We have consistently ensured the prompt remittance of all road taxes collected from operators. Our records are clean, and the government continues to trust us because of our honesty,” he noted.
He further referenced multiple court rulings which have affirmed that matters relating to the regulation of tricycle and motorcycle operations are solely state matters, not national.
“No individual can claim to operate from any so-called national office to control Delta operators. The courts have settled this,” he declared.
A Call for Unity and Vigilance
In closing, Mr. OkeOghene called on all operators to remain united under the recognized umbrella of COMTOA and to stay alert against illegal actors.
“We will not allow fraudulent individuals to destabilize this sector. COMTOA will continue to protect, defend, and stand firmly for every operator in Delta State,” he assured.
