DELTA YET TO RECEIVE CONSTITUTION AMENDMENT DRAFT.
The Speaker who gave the disclosure while receiving members of the Friends of Democracy in Nigeria in Asaba the state capital said once they receive the transmitted document, the House will deliberate on the amendment collectively with other stakeholders, expressing optimism that the nation’s democracy would be strengthened by the proposed amendment.
He commended the visitors for carrying out advocacy and enlightenment on the proposed amendment of the country’s constitution.
Other lawmakers who spoke including the Majority Leader, Hon Tim Owhefere, Chief Whip, Hon Pat Ajudua and Deputy Majority Leader, Hon Oboro Preyor as well as Rt Hon Peter Onwusanya, Hon Samuel Mariere, Hon Emeka Elekeokwurie said they were in support of the amendment.
They also noted that they were not against local government autonomy, but pointed out that the proposed amendment should be looked at holistically, while restructuring should equally be considered.
The leader of the advocacy group, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo [SAN] disclosed that the group was made up of distinguished Nigerians from different profession, adding that the legislature was the foundation on which democracy was built, hence the advocacy to state legislature across the country.
The National Coordinator of the group, Mr John Mutu stated that the National Assembly had broken down the amendment of the constitution into 21 bills out of which, 15 have been transmitted, while 6 were still being considered for harmonization between the House of Representative and the Senate.
He listed some of the amendment to include local government autonomy, financial independent for the legislature and payment of teachers’ salaries directly from the federal government account to uniform tenure for local government chairmen and Councillors among others.
